Lantern — the Bible, read aloud · Last updated 25 August 2026
Lantern has no accounts, no sign-ups, and no analytics. We never see what you read or listen to — that stays on your device. The mobile apps show banner advertising supplied by Google AdMob, which does receive some device information; that is described below.
Information we collect
We collect nothing ourselves. Lantern has no servers of our own, no login, and no analytics. We cannot see what you read, what you listen to, or how often you open the app.
Our advertising provider does receive data. See Advertising below for exactly what and why.
What the app stores on your device
So that you can pick up where you left off, Lantern saves a small amount of information in your device's local storage:
- Your current book, chapter, and verse
- Bookmarks and reading-plan progress
- Preferences such as translation, voice, reading speed, and tone
- Listening statistics and daily streak counts
This information never leaves your device and is never sent to us or to anyone else. Deleting the app removes all of it.
Scripture text and audio
The full text of every translation is bundled inside the app, so reading and listening work with no network connection and generate no requests. The reading voice is produced by your device's built-in speech engine; Lantern does not record audio and has no access to your microphone.
Advertising
Lantern is free and always will be. Advertising is what pays for it, so that reading and hearing the Bible never costs anyone anything.
The iPhone and Android apps show a single banner supplied by Google AdMob. To serve and measure that banner, Google receives technical information from your device — typically its type and operating system, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and whether an advert was shown or tapped. We do not receive that information, and we cannot connect it to anything you read.
We have configured AdMob to serve non-personalised adverts. That means adverts are chosen from general context rather than from a profile built about you, and the app does not ask for permission to track you across other companies' apps and websites, because it does not do so. This earns less than personalised advertising. We think it is the right trade for an app like this one.
Google's handling of this data is governed by Google's privacy and terms.
Some adverts are sold by us directly — to churches, publishers and seminaries. Those are plain images and text built into the app. They involve no third party, no identifier, and no data collection of any kind.
Donations
The iOS version of Lantern does not request or process donations, and contains no payment functionality. On the web version, optional gifts are handled entirely by Stripe, our payment processor; we never see or store your card details. Stripe's handling of that information is governed by Stripe's privacy policy.
Children
Lantern is suitable for all ages, and we collect no personal information from anyone, including children. Lantern is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Because the app shows advertising supplied by Google, it is not offered as a "child-directed" service.
Data sharing
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We hold none to sell.
The one third party that receives anything is Google, as our advertising provider, and only the technical information described under Advertising. Nothing about your reading — your place, your bookmarks, your listening history — is ever shared with them or with anyone else, because it never leaves your device in the first place.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date above.
